How much higher will the gold price rise?

Gold has now hurdled above $1,000 and is beginning the next stage of its decade-long bull market. Gold has risen at double-digit rates on average against all of the world’s major currencies for the past nine years, making gold one of the world’s best performing asset classes this decade. Nevertheless, relatively few people have been paying attention to gold, but that is now changing. By hurdling above $1,000 everyone everywhere is receiving a wake-up call that inflation and other monetary problems are worsening, which is of course the reason gold is rising. But how high will the gold price rise?

Gold as an asset class

Over the last year, western investor inflows into gold have soared.  The credit crisis has highlighted the importance of diversification in building portfolio allocations and one of the few true diversifiers during this period has been gold.  The rise in the gold price over the last nine years has been underpinned by strong supply-demand fundamentals, and these fundamentals remain strong going forward.

Furthermore, gold is increasingly being recognised as a form of portfolio insurance and as an asset class in its own right.  Its history as a monetary asset makes it unique as a commodity and as an asset, and the diversity of both demand and supply have been reflected in its resilience to external shocks during this difficult period.
